Logic It Appears, Has No Place Here

I just found out about the new "Sherlock Holmes" movie. The movie only has a passing resemblance to the genius created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and whose image was immortalized by Sidney Paget's drawings.

First thing that put my hackles up was the casting. Robert Downey Jr. - though a fine actor is a horrid choice as Sherlock. Jude Law as Watson is equally laughable. The casting may have been forgivable if the plot had followed anything similar to a classic Holmes' Adventure. However, as far as I can tell from the previews, the writers never even flipped through the Hound of the Baskervilles let alone The Adventure of the Dancing Men or The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.

Doing a bit more research on the movie it appears it was based more off a comic series. This in of itself annoys me. An author's literary creations should belong to them alone. Taking a classic character such as Sherlock Holmes and twisting him into something unrecognisable isn't creative it is a disgrace.

I will concede that as an action adventure movie it looks good. As a "Sherlock Holmes" movie it is going to certainly disappoint generations of Holmes' fans.

My choices for Sherlock Holmes and Watson, Christopher Eccleston and Paul Giamatti.
